Toronto could be a future city to host a Formula E race if ambitious plans to bring it to the Canadian city’s streets come off for the summer of 2028.
Formula E Notebook has uncovered details of plans for the all-electric world championship to return to Canada for the first time since the summer of 2017, via one of the country’s most progressive sustainability hubs.
Toronto has a city-wide initiative called the ‘TransformTO Strategy’, whereby the city aims to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions community-wide by 2040. The Canadian city also serves as a lighthouse participant under the Global Platform for Sustainable Cities, implementing green infrastructure and circular economy models.
Interest to put an EPrix on in Toronto has been active since 2024 but a recent acceleration in the pace of initial plans to try and get an event for the 14th (2027-28) or 15th (2029-29) seasons is being worked on.
FEN can reveal that economic impact study work and a track design has been recently worked on including scoping out infrastructure costs. It also known that a reversal of the former Indycar track, ort aspects of it, could also be used.
The IndyCar race at Toronto’s Exhibition Place ran annually from 1986 to 2025, but relocated to Markham, Ontario starting for the 2026 season. Formula E is believed to have held talks with local promoters and some agencies to see if an official feasibility can be carried out in 2027.
Additionally, plans for a sustainability conference to be held alongside a future EPrix are also in place, with an event being planned in July 2027 to be used as a buildup event for a possible wider sustainability festival including the EPrix in 2028.
Speaking to FEN recently, Formula E CEO, Jeff Dodds said he thought Toronto is “a great city and North America is really important to us because if you talk to the manufacturers and the teams and ask ‘what are your top markets for us to make sure that we double down on’ they would consistently come back with China and North America,
“Within North America we’ve recently talked to Phoenix, we talked to Atlanta, we talked to Detroit, we’ve talked to lots of places, and indeed we’ve talked to Toronto. And we feel quite good about Toronto, actually as it’s a different country to the USA, slightly different market, but an important market. I feel quite good about the location, and it does have strong racing heritage.
There have been conversations with them (Toronto), and I feel pretty good about that. Not as in I feel like we’re just about to sign something in Toronto, but I feel good about that conversation taking place, because it’s such a good location.”
Formula E has raced in Canada only once when it ran the 2016-17 season finale in the Ville-Marie area of downtown Montreal. The races were won by Lucas di Grassi and Jean-Eric Vergne.
