Edoardo Mortara and Nyck de Vries are both testing the Gen4 Mahindra this week at Guadix in Spain and are set to take part in a fourth season together as teammates in 2027.
The pair are putting more miles on the Mahindra Gen4 car which tested in the UK across the Tokyo EPrix week last month. The Mahindra test programme was drawn up and managed by Mahindra’s technical director Josef Holden, who joined the team as performance director in September 2020.
The initial shakedown for Mahindra’s new challenger was completed by reserve and simulator driver Jake Hughes at Abingdon Airfield last month and is undergoing a rigorous testing schedule throughout the remainder of the summer.
The car spent time at AVL’s full vehicle test bed facility in Austria earlier this month going through a variety of tests before heading to the Guadix track where it is sharing the track with Lola with runs completed yesterday (Wednesday) and set to continue on Friday. After its initial test programme is completed it will then be homologated by the FIA in early October.
Mortara was cagey when asked by Formula E Notebook at the London EPrix earlier this month how he was looking forward to the Gen4 period, but did state how much he enjoys being a central part of the development programme in and around a new project.
“Let’s consider that I do drive next year, I think that if you look back at my career, I was never really afraid or concerned about such challenges, technical challenges,” said Mortara.
“I think I’ve always actually enjoyed and went for these kind of scenarios, where I think that it’s a difficult situation with the team, and things are not looking from outside the best,” he said, referencing the lateness of the Gen4 project, which was only confirmed absolutely late in 2025.
“You go there, and I know that with hard work, giving actually the right indications as a driver, you can then really have an influence on the trajectory that the team will have in the next months or years.”
Nyck de Vries, who won two races for Mahindra last season at Monaco and Tokyo, is already believed to have agreed a fresh deal at Mahindra. It is expected that a decision on how Mahindra will juggle the possibility of replacing the 2021 world champion across the Interlagos WEC and Formula E rounds at Shanghai next summer will be decided ahead of the start of the present campaign. De Vries is expected to be confirmed as a Toyota driver for a fourth consecutive season later this year.
