F2 race winner Paul Aron could return to a Formula E race seat in the coming weeks, as he continues to negotiate a return to racing after being an F1 reserve drivers since the end of the 2024 season.
The Estonian has already competed in two E-Prixs after deputising for Sebastien Buemi at the 2024 Berlin E-Prix. He has been in discussions with the CUPRA KIRO team in recent weeks and is believed to be a potential replacements for Dan Ticktum, who looks set to race for another team in Season 13.
CUPRA KIRO staff recently completed the build of the two Porsche Gen4 cars that they will run in the 2026-27 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship season, beginning this December. FEN understands that the team is likely to run their cars for the first time next month prior to traveling to the official test session in November at Jarama.
A deal is far from done between Aron and CUPRA Kiro but FEN has learned that he is one of a small pool of drivers being seriously considered for a seat.
Aron impressed in his testing and racing in Formula E two years ago but has since tried to get an opportunity in Formula One where he has occasionally tested and also been on site at Grand Prix as a reserve driver.
He was loaned from Alpine to Audi for two free practice appearances this season at Barcelona and Red Bull Ring, impressing at the former where he ended the session sixth fastest.
Audi’s Team Principal, Mattia Binotto commented at the time that Aron “had proved that he’s a capable driver,” Audi F1 CEO and team boss Mattia Binotto said of Aron’s FP1.
“He’s a fast driver. He never tested that car on track. Immediately fast since the very first lap, the very first run. So, well deserved from him. Happy that somehow he could show what he’s capable of, because at the end he’s a great driver”.
Aron, who is managed by his brother and former noted single-seater race Ralf Aron, is believed to be interested in a race seat in Formula E. This likely to have been accelerated by seeing his former racing contemporaries in F2, Pepe Marti and Zak O’Sullivan forging careers
Other F2 on the edges of FE
It is no co-incidence that September has seen an influx of interest from former and current F2 drivers in Formula E, especially considering that seats at Fortescue Zero, Lola, CUPRA KIRO and the planned Porsche customer team ‘NewCo Formula E Team’ are open.
While drivers with experience such as Joel Eriksson and Dan Ticktum are well in the frame for these berths, a host of F2 talent are circling and are in some cases highly attractive for teams.
Kush Maini is believed to be a notable mover and shaker for a potential seat for next season and also comes with pedigree as both a multiple F2 winner but also a knowledgeable and experienced tester and reserve for Mahindra.
Other names being circulated within teams are Joshua Durksen, Sebastian Montoya, Cian Shields, Luke Browning, Rafael Villagómez and Alex Dunne (pictured below).
Some of those are highly likely to concentrate on their F1 ambitions while others face critical junctures in their professional careers. Some will inevitably get their Formula E chance whether it is this coming season or in the near future.
