Pascal Wehrlein became the first recipient of the FIA President’s Medal in Formula E after taking his first win of the 2024-25 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship at the Miami ePrix last Saturday.
In 2025, the FIA President’s Medals are set to be awarded beyond Formula One for the first time, expanding to four additional championships. These newly introduced medals are crafted from fully recycled materials, offering a sustainable tribute to drivers’ achievements while serving as a lasting personal reminder of their success.
Currently, race champions receive trophies, which, depending on team agreements, are often returned to head office as symbols of the teamwork and dedication behind each victory. With the introduction of the FIA President’s Medals by President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, race winners can now keep a unique, personal piece of silverware to celebrate their success.
Conceived by Ben Sulayem with a strong emphasis on sustainability, the FIA-designed medals are produced through a fully recyclable process, reflecting the FIA’s commitment to eco-sustainability. Using a unique manufacturing method that transforms waste materials into high-quality resources, the creation of the medals gives precious metals a second life, creating a circular production.
Speaking about his vision behind the medals’ creation, FIA President, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, said: “When racing, our drivers give everything they have to secure a spot at the top of the podium, and as the governing body for motorsport, we have a responsibility to recognise and celebrate these champions. I wanted to create an emblem that reflects their commitment and skill – a tangible reminder of their victory.
“Crucially, this medal needs to represent the innovation and progress being made across our championships. By celebrating these victories with a sustainably crafted medal, we not only recognise our race winners and their achievement but also highlight the ongoing efforts within our sport to protect and preserve it for future generations.”
Working with sustainable manufacturer Libe Incisioni, the President and the FIA have ensured the process of recycling begins at the moment of the design, with all metal waste from the creation phase preserved and recycled.
Commenting on the process, Lorenzo Invernizzi, owner of Libe Incisioni said: “It is a real honour to be able to bring our full-circle production methods to the pinnacle of motorsport. During our creative discussions with the FIA, President Ben Sulayem was clear in his wish to ensure a sustainable manufacturing process that not only creates minimal environmental impact but also delivers a product that is fitting for such a special moment, something that recognises the commitment and success of the recipients. Seeing this vision on more podiums is a testament to the FIA’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and the celebration of achievement.”
From April, the FIA President Medal will be presented to the winners of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, FIA World Endurance Championship, FIA World Rally Championship, with winners of the FIA Karting World Championship categories receiving it in September and October.
