Insights from the fast-moving world of Formula E

Every FE driver at Le Mans (and we mean every!)

Nine current Formula E drivers and five former stars will all be in action at tomorrow’s 94th running of the great 24 Hours of Le Mans.

At Peugeot, Nick Cassidy, will make his Hypercar debut at the legendary track as he continues to be one of the busiest drivers in international motorsport this season, sharing the #93 Peugeot 9X8 with Paul di Resta and current Jaguar reserve and development driver Stoffel Vandoorne.

In the other Peugeot, Maserati and Citroen tester Theo Pourchaire races with veteran Loic Duval and Spa pole sitter, Malthe Jakobsen.

At Toyota, Envision’s Sebastien Buemi shares the #8 TR010 Hypercar with ex Dragon driver Brendon Hartley, while ex Venturi driver Mike Conway is one third of a trio that comprises Andretti one-off driver Kamui Kobayashi and winner of the recent first Monaco EPrix, Nyck de Vries.

At Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA, Nissan racer Norman Nato races with brief DS Penske driver Will Stevens, while in the other Caddy, Jack Aitken who tested with Envision races with Sebastien Bourdais and Earl Bamber.

Filipe Albuquerque had one appearance at the Formula E rookie test when he drove for the DS Techeetah team in 2020.

Alpine sees Antonio Felix da Costa return to the Hypercar category for the first time since 2023, while in the sister Alpine A424 entry, Nissan tester Victor Martins races with sometime Michelin and Techeetah tester, Frederic Makowiecki.

BMW has plenty of Formula E old boys with Rene Rast (ex-Audi and McLaren) in the #20 car with Robin Frijns who scored two EPrix wins with Envision before dropping off the grid last summer. They share with Sheldon van der Linde who has appeared twice for Jaguar in rookie tests.

In the sister #20 BMW, Dries Vanthoor and Raffaele Marciello race together, both having tested in FE for Envision and Dragon respectively. They will start the race from pole position after Vanthoor set the fastest lap of Thursday’s Hyperpole 2 session.

Ferrari enters three cars, two as Ferrari AF Corse and one as AF Corse, with ex Jaguar driver James Calado and former Dragon racer Antonio Giovinazzi in the #51 Ferrari 499P Hypercar.

In the #50 car, Antonio Fuoco, who tested with Dragon in 2018 attempts to repeat his epic win alongside teammates Nicklas Nielsen and Miguel Molina in 2024.

The new Genesis MAGMA operation has ex Techeetah and Porche driver Andre Lotterer at the wheel of the #17 car. Pipo Derani, who tested for Mahindra in 2020 joins the three-time Le Mans winner. Daniel Juncadella, who tested for HWA and Mahindra in Gen1 and Gen2 races in the #19 Gensis GMR-001 Hypercar.

Only one of Aston Martin’s sextet of drivers in Hypercar has any traceability to Formula E with Harry Tincknell having tested for Jaguar, Audi and NIO in the Gen1 and Gen2 eras.

LMP2

In the LMP2 category Porsche’s Nico Mueller races for the Inter Europol Competition Oreca-Gibson, while one time Renger van der Zande, with DKR Engineering this year, was supposed to test for DS Techeetah in 2021 until the test was cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mikkel Jensen turns out for United Autosports ahead of his McLaren Hypercar drive next season. The Dane tested for the CUPRA Kiro team at Jeddah in 2025.

Pole sitter and podium achiever Jake Hughes makes his LA Sarthe debut with the Algarve Pro Racing squad tomorrow. Hughes is competing in the European Le Mans Series this season with the team.

The Vector Sports team has plenty of links to Formula E as it is owned by former Dragon/Penske team manager Gary Holland. He will run ex Jaguar test driver Pietro Fittipaldi at Le Mans.

The Duqueine team has Citroen Gen4 development driver Doriane Pin within its team, in addition to highly rated F2 race winner and recent Lola Yamaha ABT test driver, Richard Verschoor in the #30 entered Oreca-Gibson.

Defending his crown in LMP2 at Le Mans will be Jaguar simulator and development driver Tom Dillmann, as he shares the #43 Inter Europol Competition car with owner Kuba Smiechowski and Nick Yelloly.

Oliver Jarvis was planned to test for the Mahindra team in 2021 until the planned Valencia test was cancelled, while most tenuously of all, #222 United Autosports driver, Ben Hanley, was initially brought in to substitute for Oliver Turvey at the 2016 Berlin EPrix for the NEXTEV team.

Turvey had conflicting Super GT commitments in Japan. However, those Super GT rounds were ultimately postponed due to the Kumamoto earthquakes. This allowed Turvey to return to his NEXTEV seat, meaning Hanley missed out on the race.

LMGT3

The Heart of Racing Aston Martin squad has Mattia Drudi within its squad, and the Italian tested for Audi at Berlin in 2020. The Italian scored a second consecutive LMGT3 pole position on Thursday evening at Le Mans for the Heart of Racing Aston Martin team.

The TF Sport operation has a pair of former Formula E testers in Jonny Edgar (Envision) and Charlie Eastwood (McLaren).

Jose-Maria Lopez started 33 Formula E races between 2016 and 2019 for Virgin and Dragon and races for the #87 Akkodis ASP Lexus team for the second time at Le Mans this year.

Lilou Wadoux is one of two female drivers to tackle Le Mans this year with the #150 Richard Mille AF Corse Ferrari. She was slated to drive for Jaguar at the 2024 rookie test at Jarama but was unable to take part after technical issues.
